Oreninc Index Update: May 29, 2014

Oreninc Index Bounces Back

The Oreninc Index jumped up for the week ending May 29, 2014. Given the Memorial Day holiday in the United States, the increase was somewhat unexpected. Total dollars announced jumped to $162m, a three-week high. Brokered activity was also up to $84.5m on four deals, a three-week high; two bought deals were announced at $77m, a three-week high. Average deal size continued its climb to $4.9m, a 12-week high. It’s good to see some real cash floating around during a time when financings tend to wind down as juniors gear up for their summer programs. This week continues to underscore the theme of Spring 2014: not great, but better than last year.

Oreninc Index Falls in Holiday-Shortened Week

The Oreninc Index stumbled modestly for the week ending May 22, 2014. While it’s never good to see a dip in performance, this was an expected one given the Victoria Day holiday last week and Memorial Day in the States this week. Total dollars announced jumped to $115.2m, a two-week high. Brokered dollars were down to $15m on one deal, a nine-week low. There were no bought deals for the first time in 19 weeks. Expect next week to be at a similarly low level, given the holiday in the States and the unofficial mark of the beginning of summer.

Index Moving Average Climbs for Fourth Week

Despite the weekly state of the market falling, the five-week moving average increased for the fourth straight week, the first time since late February, for the week ending May 15th, 2014. Unfortunately, dollars raised in both brokered and non-brokered offerings was down this week, which will likely be the case over the next two weeks due to Victoria Day (yesterday) and Memorial Day next Monday in the United States.

Oreninc Index Continues Modest Growth

The Oreninc Index continued its slow upward trend for the week ending May 8, 2014. Total dollars announced exploded to $165.2m, an eight-week high. Brokered dollars announced was $90.8m on four deals, a two-week low; bought dollars announced rose to $90m on three deals, a nine-week high. Though not an overwhelming jump, it is still nice to see a positive trend, especially compared to the previous month. That being said, it would be surprising if this type of growth continues into the summer.
